The Fire of the Altar Must Kindle Action in the Streets

In the Old Testament, the role of the prophets was to serve as God’s spokespersons, called to proclaim the divine will, often in times of covenant unfaithfulness, injustice, or crisis. They confronted kings, priests, and the people with bold truth rooted in God's justice and mercy. Prophets like Isaiah, Amos, Jeremiah, and Micah called Israel to repentance, social righteousness, and faithful worship, reminding the nation of its responsibility to care for the poor, the widow, the orphan, and the stranger. Their ministry was both spiritual and political, seeking to realign society with God’s covenant and revealing that true worship is inseparable from justice. Mission Talk understands that as churches our worship is connected to our responsibility to our neighbors. “We empower people to lead change and mobilize them to express their faith publicly through prophetic advocacy.” Prophetic advocacy, according to Mission Talk, is the “Spirit-empowered practice of raising a public voice to confront injustice and call communities toward God’s vision of justice, compassion, and restoration”. It flows from a theology of social holiness where worship leads to action, and discipleship includes public witness. Rooted in Scripture and community discernment, prophetic advocacy challenges systems that harm the image of God in others and mobilizes the Church to speak truth, seek justice, and stand in solidarity with the oppressed. To do this well, Mission Talk takes two directions: community transformation and advocacy. Community transformation is the process of restoring and renewing neighborhoods through collective action, spiritual formation, and systemic change that reflects God’s justice and love. Mission Talk teaches the churches to do mapping of their communities and community organizing. The churches discern how the Holy Spirit guides them in the process of turning needs into service and advocacy. Advocacy is the intentional act of raising one’s voice and influence to challenge injustice and promote policies and practices that protect the dignity and well-being of all people. Advocacy calls us to prophetically engage public life—not with partisan allegiance, but with gospel-rooted courage. It declares that God cares about policies and systems and how these impact the lives of persons in life giving or oppressive ways. Community transformation and advocacy make the church relevant because it becomes a moral voice in society, echoing the biblical prophets and Jesus himself. It may take the form of op-eds about the death sentence, public vigils for those executed, writing letters to legislators making them aware of needs in the community or lobbying for fairness or justice on a particular issue, protesting the policies on immigration and the ways these are implemented in dehumanizing ways, testimony at public hearings where a minister may share theological and ethical insights before a city council, speaking on affordable housing, immigration or quality education for the poor. These expressions are the variety of ways that the churches play in the movement of Mission Talk. We are responding to the issues of our moment that affect our neighbors adversely but more importantly we do so because the Word of God informs us and the Holy Spirit guides us towards directions that bring life and thriving to the communities we serve. Mission Talk names the injustices, invites collective moral reflection and ethical imagination around these, it frames hope and resistance through a biblical/theological lens and inspires concrete action in public life (advocacy, solidarity, organizing) rather than avoiding controversial or political issues. It helps the churches discern the gospel’s call in public matters. The movement of Mission Talk churches is not only spiritual but also socially and culturally aware, speaking to the realities that shape people's lives. This is the hope of the resurrection. Mission Talk is forming a resurrection people in action where we incarnate Christ in the midst of a wounded world. People of the faith whose understanding of the life of the Spirit is deepened as the fire of our altar kindles action in the streets.
