We grieve with his family, his neighbors, and his colleagues in the medical community, and we pray for truth and accountability in the days ahead. This tragic death comes after the killing of Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen and mother who lost her life during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis earlier this month. These are not isolated incidents. Together, they reveal a deeply troubling pattern that should concern every person of faith and conscience. What happened to Alex Pretti reflects immigration enforcement practices increasingly shaped by fear, force, and the dehumanization of entire communities. When enforcement operations are carried out in ways that escalate risk rather than protect life, innocent people are placed in harm’s way. Scripture calls us to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Our faith demands reverence for human life, especially when the power of the state is exercised. Right now, families are afraid, children are paying attention, and churches are absorbing fear and grief. That pastoral reality must be taken seriously. “What is happening in Minnesota matters deeply to us in Florida,” said Agustín Quiles, President of Mission Talk. “Aggressive enforcement approaches are being used across the country, fueled by false and dangerous rhetoric that treats immigrant communities as threats.
