Mission Talk Statement on the Federal Budget BillAs a network of Christian leaders, Mission Talk is grieved by the passage of a federal budget bill that fails to reflect the values of justice, compassion, and care for the vulnerable that lie at the heart of the Gospel. While we acknowledge that this bill includes some provisions we do not oppose, we cannot support legislation that places such heavy burdens on the poor, the sick, the immigrant, and the working families in our communities—families who are already struggling under the weight of high rents, unaffordable housing, low salaries, and inadequate healthcare. Scripture is clear: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these... you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). Budgets are not just financial documents—they are moral declarations of what and whom we value. This budget delivers $1.3 trillion in tax cuts to the wealthiest households, while enacting heartbreaking and devastating cuts to the very programs that serve those most in need. It reduces access to health care, weakens food assistance, threatens rural hospitals and long-term care, and expands enforcement against immigrant families—many of whom sit in our pews, worship in our churches, and serve in our ministries. These choices reflect neither the mercy of Christ nor the justice of His Kingdom. At Mission Talk, we believe our laws and budgets must reflect the character of God: just, compassionate, and faithful to the call to love our neighbors. We remain committed to working with our church leaders, partners, and elected officials to advocate for a better way—one that lifts up the downtrodden, honors human dignity, and seeks the flourishing of all communities. We pray that our nation’s leaders will reflect deeply, repent where needed, and recommit themselves to the work of justice, mercy, and humble leadership. “He has shown you, O man, what is good.
