Listening to Our Communities Across Florida: Spring Organizing Report

This past spring, Mission Talk hosted eight regional organizing events across Florida, engaging over 220 pastors and community leaders from Kissimmee to Fort Myers. Each gathering invited leaders to listen deeply, name their community’s greatest challenges, and begin imagining what Spirit-led transformation could look like.

Across every region, key issues rose to the surface: housing insecurity, immigration struggles, mental health needs, youth disengagement, and persistent poverty. These conversations revealed not only frustration, but a powerful undercurrent of hope and readiness.

We left each city with something sacred—new relationships, identified leaders, and a shared commitment to act. These gatherings are the groundwork for what’s next: a statewide movement of churches committed to public discipleship and community transformation.

The Remnant: Justice as a Path to Restoration

Last month’s Remnant article comes from Dr. Harold Segura, who offers a rich theological reflection titled “Biblical Justice as a Path to Restoration.”

Dr Segura opens his reflection with a powerful quote from Dorothy Day:

“We cannot love God if we do not love our brothers and sisters. And we cannot love our brothers and sisters if we do not do justice to them.” 

Dr. Segura then reminds us that justice isn’t an idea—it’s a practice of love. He also challenges us to understand theology not as a distant concept, but as a tool for discernment in a fractured world:

“In this complex scenario, theology has something to say—not as a single voice or moral compass, but as an exercise of discernment in faith.”

Mission Talk Featured in Religion News Service: Deportations Are Tearing Families and Churches Apart

Mission Talk was recently featured in Religion News Service for our work standing with immigrant families impacted by unjust deportation policies. The article highlights how fear of ICE raids is keeping people from going to work, showing up to church, or even seeking help—and how this fear is not only harming families, but placing real strain on the life of the Church itself.

As people of faith, we know that when one part of the body suffers, we all suffer. We will continue to speak out and stand with our immigrant brothers and sisters, affirming their dignity and calling the Church to respond with courage and compassion.

We Mourn Another Execution,
and Brace for the Next

On July 31, the state of Florida carried out the execution of Edward J. Zakrzewski—another reminder of a justice system more focused on retribution than restoration.

Latino Evangelical pastors and leaders once again stood in solemn vigil, bearing witness to the sanctity of life and the Gospel’s call to mercy.

Another execution is scheduled for August 19, when the state plans to take the life of Kayla Bates—a man with a history of trauma and military service, whose story still holds the possibility of redemption.

As people of faith, we continue to advocate for a justice that restores rather than destroys. We grieve, we protest, and we pray: that our state would turn from death and choose life.

Did You Know?

According to a 2024 report by The Sentencing Project, nearly 90% of those executed in Florida over the past 10 years had a history of severe trauma, mental illness, or both.

Despite this, Florida continues to expand the death penalty—choosing punishment over healing and perpetuating cycles of violence instead of breaking them.

Justice that ignores suffering is not justice at all. As people of faith, we are called to advocate for systems that restore rather than condemn.
