The federal spending bill currently being debated in Congress includes provisions that would cause serious harm to our communities, although it also contains other elements that we do not oppose. However, taken as a whole, this bill would do far more harm than good, and that is why we clearly oppose its current form.

The reason? Because the negative impact on the communities we serve would be profound.

This bill:

• Would eliminate access to healthcare for 16 million Americans

• Would cut $1.3 trillion from Medicaid, Medicare, and food assistance

• Would put more than 300 rural hospitals at risk of closure

• Would cut off food assistance for nearly 5 million people

• Would cut long-term care for seniors

• Would add $3.25 trillion to the national debt while giving $1.3 trillion in tax cuts to billionaires

• Would make it easier to purchase silencers and dangerous firearms

• Would massively increase funding for immigration enforcement and detention: $75 billion to enforce detention and $45 billion to incarcerate immigrants, including children. Plus $69 billion for the border wall.

As Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina put it: “I don’t bow to anyone when the people of North Carolina are at risk, and this puts them at risk.”

As people of faith, we are called to protect the poor and vulnerable. We ask you to join us in urging Congress to reject this budget in its current form and instead work toward a proposal that reflects true moral leadership, prioritizing the health, safety, and human dignity of all.

URGENCY: The bill will be signed any moment. Send the letter to your parishioners as soon as possible.

La propuesta de presupuesto federal que actualmente se debate en el Congreso incluye disposiciones que causarían un daño grave a nuestras comunidades, aunque también contiene otros elementos a los que no nos oponemos. Sin embargo, en su conjunto, este proyecto de ley haría mucho más daño que bien, y por eso nos manifestamos claramente en contra de su forma actual.

¿La razón? Porque el impacto negativo sobre las comunidades a las que servimos sería profundo.

Este proyecto de ley:

• Recortará $1.3 trillones de Medicaid, Medicare y asistencia alimentaria

• Cortaría la asistencia alimentaria para casi 5 millones de personas

• Recortará el cuidado a largo plazo para adultos mayores

• Añadiría $3.25 trillones a la deuda nacional mientras otorga $1.3 trillones en recortes fiscales a multimillonarios

• Facilita la compra de silenciadores y armas de fuego peligrosas

• Aumentaría masivamente los fondos para la aplicación de leyes migratorias y detención. 75 billones para enforzar la detención y 45 billones para encarcelar a inmigrantes, incluyendo niños. Aparte de 69 billones para la muralla de la frontera.

Como lo expresó el senador republicano Thom Tillis de Carolina del Norte:

“No me inclino ante nadie cuando la gente de Carolina del Norte está en riesgo, y esto los pone en riesgo.”

Como personas de fe, estamos llamados a proteger a los pobres y a los vulnerables. Les pedimos que se unan a nosotros para instar al Congreso a rechazar este presupuesto en su forma actual y, en su lugar, trabajar por una propuesta que refleje un liderazgo moral verdadero, que priorice la salud, la seguridad y la dignidad humana de todos.
