Ingrid Delgado - We will be joined by Ingrid, a member of Mission Talk’s Policy Advisory Team, who spent more than a decade advocating to end the death penalty in Florida. Ingrid will provide important context on current developments and the state of capital punishment in Florida today.

Exoneree - The forum will feature a man who was wrongfully convicted and spent more than 10 years on Florida’s death row for a crime he did not commit. One of 30 death row exonerees in Florida, he will share his powerful story in his own words.

Why is this forum important?

Florida leads the nation in executions despite having one of the highest numbers of people who have been exonerated after being wrongfully convicted. The state executed 19 people last year, and the pace of executions has continued to accelerate. As of August 19, 2026, it has carried out 13 executions, including two that were carried out on the same day. Another two executions are currently scheduled. This pace puts Florida ahead of every other state in the country combined.

Who is most likely to receive the death penalty?

The death penalty often falls most heavily on society’s most vulnerable. Military veterans who served this country have gone to the death chamber. So have people the courts themselves recognized as suffering from extreme mental or emotional disturbance. So have elderly and infirm prisoners, so diminished by age and decades of incarceration that they can no longer bathe or dress without help. Many of those executed in the last two years were childhood victims of severe sexual and physical abuse and neglect.
