Public Policy:
A Faith-Rooted Vision for Justice
Mission Talk’s Policy Platform reflects our commitment to shaping public policies through faith values of grace, compassion, and dignity. We stand with Latino churches and communities to address the issues that most directly affect daily life.
Youth Justice
“Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.”
—Luke 6:36
Florida is a national outlier in prosecuting children as adults, often without meaningful checks. Black and Latino youth are disproportionately affected.
We support legislation that:
Establishes a minimum age for children to be charged as adults.
Significantly limits the prosecution of youth in adult courts.
Expands diversion opportunities, especially for developmentally disabled youth.
Death Penalty
“Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.” —Deuteronomy 30:19
Florida leads the nation in executions and wrongful convictions. The system is unnecessary, unjust, and deeply flawed.
We support legislation that:
Ends the death penalty in Florida.
Exempts individuals with severe mental illness from capital punishment.
Restores unanimous jury requirements for death sentences.
Housing
“Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.”
—Proverbs 19:17
Housing is a foundation for health, family, and opportunity. Yet Florida faces soaring rents and one of the highest homelessness rates in the U.S.
We support policies that:
Increase public investment in affordable housing.
Restore local authority to use rent stabilization when needed.
End the criminalization of homelessness.
Immigration
“Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by doing so some have unwittingly entertained angels.”
—Hebrews 13:2
Immigrants are vital to Florida’s congregations, economy, and neighborhoods. Yet state laws have fueled fear and division.
We support undoing recent legislation that harms Florida's immigrant community and urge the Florida legislature to pass laws that uphold the human dignity of our immigrant brothers and sisters. This includes:
An end to state laws that criminalize immigrants and sow fear and distrust
Increasing immigrant families’ access to essential state and local-level services
We also urge Congress to uphold national and international asylum laws for refugees fleeing from dangerous situations, expand legal protections for immigrant families, and provide relief to immigrants via a pathway to citizenship.
